You're kidding me right?

I work in an Emergency Department though some days it is questionable if indeed it truly is an emergency department.

Case in point. Just today I had a lovely LOL with a head bleed. We are not sure if the fall she sustained was the culprit of the bleed or if uncontrolled hypertension caused it. However her blood pressure was too high and it needed to be lowered.
Doc writes order for Cardene, nurse goes to Pyxis to obtain Cardene and the receptacle is empty. No problem, minor irritation, but no problem. I call Pharmacy and inform them that Pyxis is empty can I get more please. Pharmacy insists that the "computer" says their are two, I insist NO there are none, please get me some....pronto! Then I'm told, we don't have any, WTF!!! What kind of joint are we running here? I call the ICU, "you got any??, "NO". SHIT!!!! Tell the Doc, he's like WTH!! Pharmacy calls back, well we do have a bag but it says do not use and there is no other info on it "well have to call the head pharmacist" Okay great, do that.
Head Pharmacist finally calls back. "So you mean to tell me that your Pyxis count is off and we've lost revenue for the missing product blah, blah, blah," I cut her off and said. I don't care, I have a patient with a BRAIN BLEED and her BP MUST be lowered. "Oh, okay, well have you asked the MD to try labetolol?" WTF, dontcha think he may have thought of that and nixed the idea, hence the reason for writing CARDENE!!!! But hold on let me ask him for you. I ask Doc he starts laughing and says let me talk to her. End of story, head pharmacist tells MD we were holding that bag of Cardene for an EMERGENCY, Oh really, WTF is your criteria for an emergency?

Then there was the time I could not get blood for a GSW to the head. Lab insisted that T&C be done first, "No we can't possibly send Type O, must T&C FIRST!!!"." Guy died, bled to death....and in truth he was going to die anyway. But, about one hour after he died the lab calls "Your blood is ready" Me "UH, too late dude is dead, bled to death because he could not GET any blood!!" "Oh, okay well it's ready." DUH!!!

I'm looking for a new job.

Busy

Good grief!

I'm better at reading blogs than composing my own. I have been so busy over the holidays with, well, --- the holidays, and preparing for the HESI Test. The HESI is an exit test that nursing students have to take and pass prior to graduation. My understanding is that nursing schools impose this test on students to ensure that their NCLEX pass rates stay high. I'm wondering what the hell is wrong with my consistent performance in class and clinicals, not to mention a 3.8 GPA. Yes, I realize it is not a 4.0 but it's still really good? Oh well, no use whining about it, I just have to suffer through 89 more days of nursing hell, I mean nursing school.

My job in the ER is going really well and I learn new and interesting things everday. I'm really learning about the paperwork and documentation and I feel this will be a great advantage once I transition, then I only have to learn how to care for a real live patient! The most hilarious aspect of my job is that I am now the "go to" person for computer related programs, what is hilarious is that I know so little, but what I do know is relevant to this job!!! Thank goodness I have a husband who works for NASA, everything I know, which isn't much I've learned from him, not that he hasn't tried to teach me more but some of it makes my eyes roll up into the back of my head and I just have to run away from the lesson.

Enough for now.

Happy New Year.
